Chemistry of Materials - A Detailed Look at Calorimetry
Chemistry of Materials - A Detailed Look at CalorimetryChemistry of Materials is the process of understanding and analyzing the chemical interactions in physical systems. The Chemical Equivalents System of the United States Chemical Society describes a number of measurements used in the analysis of mixtures for their applicability in the laboratory. Chemists also commonly apply these measures in fields of industry and electronics.Chemical equilibria are used to determine the amount of each chemical that can be expected in a mixture when it is in equilibrium with the others. Mixtures may be expected to be in equilibrium if they contain the same amount of all the chemicals present. Some equilibrium points exist for all mixtures which can be called equilibrium states. These states are somewhat similar to being in the center of a wheel.Conditions of equilibrium will allow any mixture of the chemicals to remain in a constant state as long as they maintain their normal proportions. On the other hand, if the mixture is disturbed it will change its proportions. In most cases the molecules will still remain in the same position and the mixture will not actually move in any direction.Mixtures can be broken into the molecular-combustion state, the boiling point state, the freezing point state, and the vapor pressure state. In each of these states the concentration and concentrations of all the chemical ingredients will be different. The mass and molecular properties of a substance can affect the mass and molecular structure of the resulting chemical. The chemical formula will describe a specific compound and it can also be referred to as a chemical formula. An equilibrating mixture will contain the same amounts of all the ingredients in the same ratios and in the same proportions. Other factors such as the length of time the substance has been exposed to the atmosphere will affect the chemical compositions of the mixture.Chemical equilibria can be measured with the help of calorimetry, which is also known as gas chromatography. Calorimetry is a very sensitive and accurate method to identify the equilibrium state of the mixture and it will detect any alterations in the concentration of chemicals within a sample of the mixture.Calorimetry is sensitive to changes in temperature which will cause the equilibrium to break down as the mixture warms up and moves towards the equilibrium point. Calorimetry is used in laboratories all over the world to determine the equilibrium point of mixtures.

Life Is All About Change - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Life Is All About Change - Introvert Whisperer Life Is All About Change Iâm a bit sentimental today. Some of you may know or realize that when I started out as a coach, my website and business name was Next Chapter New Life. When I launched Introvert Whisperer over a year ago, I was unclear what to do with that website. Because I wasnât clear, I kept it going and continued to post content to it. I decided to âend-of-lifeâ the website, thus closing that chapter in my life. Thatâs why Iâm waxing nostalgic. It wonât impact anything you typically see from me. Because my roots are in change, I have to use this as an illustration for you on how we work in making change and the emotional reaction to change called transition. The first phase of transition is an ending. Something has to come to an end and for me, the end started last year as I ramped up Introvert Whisperer. During the end phase, you begin to disengage and begin to lose identification with what you are ending. I was identifying less with Next Chapter and more with Introvert Whisperer. The next phase is what I called confusion; Because it is largely a period where you feel unshaped by purpose. With my Next Chapter website/persona, that period of confusion has lasted a year. I wasnât clear what to do with it so rather than pulling the plug or redefining it, I decided my clarity would eventually come as I spent more time defining myself with Introvert Whisperer. Iâll note that we all move through our transition phases at different rates. For me, I felt that there would come a day where the answer of what to do would eventually arrive. It also let me come to grips with ending something I was very emotionally invested in. The last phase is beginnings. Introvert Whisperer to a large degree was the beginning and with this phase you have a new identity or direction. Itâs an energetic phase as you are further touching into new territory. Iâll note for you that while these three parts of transition are called phases, they occur at the same time. They occur in different proportions throughout the change but we shift through them daily. Because of the overlapping nature of the phases, we also experience mixed emotions and can often confuse these mixed emotions for making a wrong decision. You can feel happy and sad at the same time. Itâs a huge reason so many people avoid change because its not that comfortable. Transition = Endings-Confusion-Beginnings. You will always go through them with any change. Just know that when youâre at a low point or anxiety-ridden â" youâre normal! You will get through it. So, bye-bye Next Chapter New Life. Think about changes in your life and how these three phases occurred. It will help you the next time you have a change. Go to top Do you know what your next career step is? Many people donât. How to Get a Better Singing Voice 7 Strategies to Use
How to Get a Better Singing Voice 7 Strategies to Use Sign up successful Another breathing exercise to try: begin by breathing inward for a count of four, then exhale for a count of eight. Keep increasing your exhales by counts of four until you reach 24 or 28 (or as far as you can go). This exercise teaches you how to control air. For more elaborate breathing exercises, consult your vocal coach. Take Private Singing Lessons If youre wondering how to get a better singing voice, the easiest strategy is to work with a professional! Singing lessons are the most effective way to improve your singing voice and maximize your potential. But remember, most students are only as good as their teachers. This means that youll have to find someone who knows the ins and outs of singing. A qualified teacher can teach you exactly how to practice, how to establish proper breathing techniques, as well as the ideal singing posture and healthy singing habits. Although singing lessons are a financial investment, think of all the time that the experience will save you in the long run. Instead of seeking knowledge and advice by hunting around the Internet and teaching yourself how to sing, youll have an expert guiding you along at the right pace. Find Your Voice One critical mistake that many beginning singers make is to copy other artists styles, which doesnt allow you to build your own singing style. If youve started out by imitating another singer, you should be aware that the habit will have to be dropped at some point. Your own unique style and mindset go a long way in determining what your ânormal singing voiceâ should sound like. Your singing voice will never completely match another persons, so its smart to spend some time figuring out your own style! Find the Drama Good singers convey emotions to their audience. They use their voices to tell dramatic stories and explore feelings. In a way, singing is a form of acting. You have to conjure up feelings and emotions for the performance, even if you arent genuinely feeling those emotions during those specific moments. The best advice is to have fun with it, and your audience will see your passion! Maintain Your Health As a singer, your body is your instrument so take special care of it! Alcohol, for example, can dehydrate you and your voice, so many singers avoid it. If you consume milk or other dairy products, wash them down with water, as dairy leaves a coating on your throat. Avoid overusing your voice, belting without proper technique, or yelling, as all of these can hurt your vocal cords. Conclusion Above all, you have to work hard and work smart. This means practicing effectively and regularly, and never sacrificing proper technique. Also, sing in front of others and ask them for honest feedback. Youll never improve if you arent open to constructive criticism! Use the above strategies for how to get a better singing voice, and keep on practicing. Good luck! Interested in Private Lessons? Modern Italian was formerly a vernacular language, meaning that it was only spoken in certain c ommunities within the country. To make sense of this linguistic evolution, weâll have to go back to antiquity. A period when the Roman empire controlled a large part of Europe and when the Latin language was at its peak.Just like its cities, Italy's language is full of remnants of the Roman Empire ¦ source: Pixabay - LoggerWigglerNow considered to be a dead language, Latin was used throughout the Roman empire and continues to be used by the Catholic church. However, it is possible to distinguish between two types of Latin.Vulgar Latin or Sermo Vulgaris was the register of language that was spoken by the people, with classical Latin being reserved for science and literature. After the fall of the Roman empire, invasion separated Italy into several regions. This separation also caused the spoken language, Vulgar Latin to evolve into different dialects. It wasnât until 1861 that Italy reunified and declared the beginning of the Kingdom of Italy. To bring the citizens of the new country together, the government decided to choose one dialect as the official national language. At the centre of the boot, Tuscany had made itself an attractive region for many as a cultural and economic hub, and it was its dialect that triumphed in the decision for an official language. From 1859, Italian schools became free, and children took their classes in Italian. So, Italia is a relatively young country, and some families in the South even continue to use their regional dialects to preserve their heritage. Why Italian is the Language of LoveFrench and Italian are usually both considered to be romantic languages, however, even the French seem to agree that Italian comes out on top.The Italian vocabulary is immensely rich, meaning you have far more choice when it comes to finding an affectionate name for your loved one!Amore, caro, tesoro⦠there are more than enough Italian expressions to use when youâre making your move. Not only is the language itself a beautiful one, Italian pronu nciation is also considered to be incredibly appealing.Rich and charming, the Italian language is also regarded as the language of the Mediterranean sun and the sensual atmosphere it creates. The warm vowels of Italian pronunciation which help to accentuate the words and the rolled ârâ sound are what makes the Italian accent so melodic. And the romanticism doesnât end there.Italy is the setting for the most famous love story in the world: Romeo and Juliet. Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.Shakespeareâs Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two teenagers from Verona, in the North-West of Italy, who desperately try to keep their forbidden love a secret from their families, who are sworn enemies.Does Italy inspire you as much as it inspired Shakespeare? ¦ source: Visualhunt - JimTiffinJrThe story is one of tragedy, but remains a symbol of true love all over the world â" just like the city of Venice.Venice is the capital of love, where couples from all over the world spend their holidays and honeymoons in celebration of their love.Several surveys have shown Venice to be one of the top holiday destinations for couples. Venice is just one of Italyâs romantic hotspots, which also include Florence, Siena, Pisa and Turin.Italian Pronunciation and IntonationIf you already speak other romance languages such as French, Spanish or Portuguese, making good progress in your Italian learning is a bit easier. The Italian alphabet is more or less identical to the one used in the other romance languages, and a lot of the words are easily recognisable thanks to its Latin roots. However, properly pronouncing Italian words is the part of learning Italian that people find to be the most difficult. But why is this the case?If youâre encountering Italian as a beginner, it can be difficult to know where to place the accents on words as youâre prono uncing them.Native speakers of British English tend to accentuate the major words in each sentence, even when speaking a foreign language.Using the tonic accent (or stress) is an essential part of speaking Italian. This accent features in the vast majority of words, usually on the penultimate syllable, meaning that in practice, you should apply more stress towards the end of each word.Sometimes, itâs not the penultimate but the final syllable which is accentuated, but this is indicated in the spelling of the word in question. One such example is the word, papa.On the other hand, when this accentuation is placed on the antepenultimate syllable, it isnât indicated, so youâll have to rely on your own memory for these intonations instead!Accentuation is also important for maintaining a good level of comprehension.Stressing the wrong syllable can completely change the meaning of the word youâre using. For example, saying papà (meaning dad) without stressing the final syllable can easily become papa (meaning the Pope). The other difficulty with the Italian language, which is also the case with Spanish, is properly rolling the ârâ sounds. As native speakers of English, we are often tempted to make this sound from behind our teeth with our lips, however, to be able to correctly pronounce the Italian ârâ, you must train yourself to roll your tongue.I would advise that you practice this sound wherever you go. Itâs not enough to do just a few hoursâ practice per week if you want to learn how to speak Italian and be able to properly make this sound. Some people get do it on their first try, whereas others find it more difficult.Repeat the exercise in the morning when youâre getting ready or during your commute to work. You may feel a bit silly in the beginning, but rest assured that it will start to feel more natural as you practice.Search for Italian courses London to find your own private tutor.Speaking Italian to Share Your Passion for Italian Culture Has the charm of the Italian language made you fall in love with the Italyâs culture? Are you thinking about signing up to an Italian language course or one to one tutoring?Learning how to speak Italian is also about discovering a new culture. As the home country of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, Italy is known for its prominence in the art world, and its most famous works cannot be avoided if youâre studying the history of art in depth. The Mona Lisa - probably the world's most famous portrait - is the work of Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci ¦ source: Pixabay - Free-PhotosAs the European centre of art, itâs no surprise that Italy triggered and led the Renaissance which took place all over Europe. Is Neurofeedback an Effective Treatment for ADHD
Is Neurofeedback an Effective Treatment for ADHD Neurofeedback (also known as EEG biofeedback) is marketed as an alternative treatment for ADHD. Parents who are looking for a medication-free treatment option often hear about neurofeedback and wonder if it can help their child. However, neurofeedback can be expensive, costing between $3,000 - $6,000 for a course of treatment and is often not covered by insurance. It is also time intensive, requiring weekly sessions for a few months or longer. So, before signing your child up for sessions, learn what neurofeedback entails and what the research says about its effectiveness. What is Neurofeedback?Neurofeedback is based on the premise that the brain emits different patterns of brain-waves depending on whether a person is in a focused state or a distracted state. The goal of neurofeedback is to train the brain to produce and sustain more brain-waves associated with focus and concentration and fewer brain-waves associated with distraction or daydreaming. Neurofeedback treatment begins with brain mapping. The patient wears a cap lined with electrodes and is instructed to perform cognitive tasks (like simple math or reading). During these tasks a computer program reads the signals transmitted by the electrodes and identifies areas where the brain appears to be underactive or overactive. These areas of brain-wave underactivity or overactivity become the targets of the tailored neurofeedback treatment plan. During weekly treatment sessions the patient wears an electrode cap while playing a video game filled with challenging cognitive tasks. Brain-wave activity is measured, and if the electrode signals indicate that a child or teen has lost focus then the game stops. The game resumes when focused brain-wave activity picks up again. The patients goal is to keep the game running without interruption by staying engaged and encouraging sustained focused brain-wave activity. What the Research Says Unbiased research published by scientists without affiliations with the neurofeedback programs themselves provides the most reliable source of information about the treatments effectiveness. Locating results from these studies can be challenging, since the findings are published in academic journals and arent always described on the neurofeedback websites that appear in a Google search. A number of randomized controlled trials comparing neurofeedback to ADHD medication treatment and/or a control condition have been published. Some of these studies show that neurofeedback leads to changes in brain-wave patterns and improved performance on computer tasks. However, in studies where medication was included as a comparison treatment, the medication group always outperformed the neurofeedback group. When these studies examined the impact of neurofeedback on the child real-world ADHD symptoms at school or at home (rated by teachers and parents), there were no effects or very limited effects on symptoms. In addition, clinical scientists are concerned that there may be a placebo effect. In a recently published meta-analysis researchers combined and analyzed the data from 13 randomized controlled studies of neurofeedback. The results showed that when studies compared neurofeedback to a sham or placebo neurofeedback condition, there were no differences in computer task performance or ADHD symptoms between the placebo group and the actual neurofeedback group.1 Being an Educated Consumer The current research suggests that parents should be cautious about enrolling their children in neurofeedback for ADHD. Of course, there are children who have received neurofeedback whose parents report an improvement in ADHD symptoms, and there are also many children whose parents say they saw no change in symptoms. It is possible that some children do in fact see some benefit. If ADHD medication is not effective or if symptoms that persist even after other evidence-based treatments have been tried, then neurofeedback may be an alternative treatment to explore for your child. If you choose to seek out neurofeedback treatment, remember that the goal of treatment should be to see real world improvement in ADHD symptoms at school and at home and not only improvement on a handful of computer tasks or a change in brain-wave patterns. Ask the neurofeedback practitioner how they will monitor real world symptom improvement. Will they be obtaining rating scales from parents and teachers at regular intervals? Also ask how soon should you expect to see improvement, and at what point should you stop the treatment if there is no observable change in ADHD symptoms or behavior. Neurofeedback requires a significant investment of time and money. Before enrolling, make sure you have explored evidence-based behavioral treatments and medication options first. Also, consider your childs specific challenges and look for interventions with proven track records that target the areas where your child needs help the most. These can be academic interventions, social interventions, programs that help kids learn to manage their emotions, or behavioral treatments that target ADHD symptoms specifically. Targeted interventions with a history of proven outcomes are most likely to lead to real-world results for your child or teen with ADHD. 1 Cortese, S., Ferrin, M., Brandeis, D., Holtmann, M., Aggensteiner, P., Daley, D., Santosh, P., Simonoff, E., Stevenson, J., Stringaris, A., Sonuga-Barke, E., on behalf of the European ADHD Guidelines Group (EAGG) (2016).
